What is a Pediatric Dentist?

A pediatric dentist is a dentist who has completed additional years of specialty training beyond dental school through a residency program. This advanced training focuses exclusively on the unique needs of infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special health care needs.

Pediatric dental residency training includes:

  1. Growth and development of the teeth, jaws, and facial structures
  2. Behavior guidance techniques, including treatment under general anesthesia
  3. Comprehensive care for children with complex medical conditions and special needs adults
  4. Interceptive orthodontics (early orthodontic evaluation and treatment)
  5. Diagnosis and treatment of dental trauma
  • Board certification through the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) is an additional, voluntary credential that demonstrates a pediatric dentist’s commitment to excellence in the specialty.

    The process includes:

    1. Passing a rigorous written qualifying examination (which Dr. Dobson completed during her residency).
    2. After at least one year of practice, successfully completing a comprehensive oral examination before ABPD examiners.

While not required to practice, many pediatric dentists pursue board certification as a personal and professional commitment to the highest standards of care. Dr. Dobson completed her oral board examination in Raleigh, North Carolina, and has maintained her certification since.

To retain the distinction of being board certified, Dr. Dobson completes annual continuing education and ongoing professional development through the ABPD.

  1. Warm Welcome – A dental assistant will bring the child and parent to the exam room, review medical history, and begin the cleaning.
  2. Cleaning – We use a special toothpaste called prophy paste. Children are given age-appropriate autonomy, such as choosing their toothpaste flavor, to make the vi sit fun and comfortable.
  3. Dental Exam – Dr. Dobson will:
  • Check how the teeth are coming together
  • Provide guidance on skeletal and dental development
  • Assess airway health, including tonsil size and breathing patterns (day and night)
  • Examine for cavities (visible or suspected between teeth)

If cavities are suspected, X-rays may be recommended.

At Commonwealth Pediatric Dentistry, we’re proud to offer the newest technologies in pediatric dentistry to our patients. Our advanced lasers allow us to provide care that is more comfortable, precise, and less intimidating for children and families.

With the Fotona LightWalker II, we can treat cavities without the need for drills, loud noises, or multiple injections. In many cases, decay is gently removed while protecting healthy tooth structure—and often without numbing at all.

For soft tissue care, such as tongue-tie and lip-tie releases, we use the LightScalpel CO₂ laser. This technology allows for quick procedures with minimal bleeding and faster healing—making it especially beneficial for infants and children.

Our goal is to pair cutting-edge technology with compassionate care, giving your child a healthier smile and a more positive dental experience.

At Commonwealth Pediatric Dentistry, your child’s safety and comfort are always our top priority. For some children, completing dental treatment in the traditional setting can feel overwhelming. That’s why we offer in-office general anesthesia, provided by a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist.
With this option, your child can comfortably “sleep” through their dental care, while their vital signs are closely monitored the entire time. This allows us to complete all necessary treatment safely, effectively, and in a single visit—helping to reduce stress for both children and parents.
